History
The Sherbrooke Amateur Basketball Association was born in 1975 due to a group of avid and dedicated members of the community who recognised the need for a local organisation to offer basketball to the hills.
A notice was placed in the local paper advertising a meeting to be held in Tecoma Uniting Church Hall for any people interested in the foundation of a new basketball association. This resulted in a steering committee being established and shortly after a new association was included in the Victorian Country Basketball League.
The first games were played on one three-quarter sized court on Tuesday nights at Ferntree Gully Technical School and involved a Senior Competition that attracted teams in its inaugural season.
In 1980 due to changing boundaries S.A.B.A. became affiliated with the Victorian Basketball Association. Two years later S.A.B.A. moved to a larger venue utilising three courts at Boronia Stadium. In 1988 S.A.B.A. involved itself with the planning and building of the “old” Upwey High School Stadium. Having outgrown available court space at Boronia two years were spent at St Joseph’s College in Ferntree Gully whilst awaiting completion of the Upwey venue. Over the years other venues in the hills have been utilised by Sherbrooke: Monbulk College, Emerald Secondary School and Belgrave Heights Christian School. In 2007 Sherbrooke was offered the management rights of Cockatoo Mountain Road Reserve stadium, a single court facility which has served the local hills community well, providing a venue for basketball amongst other sports and programs.
Over the years Sherbrooke has consistently offered people in the hills the opportunity of playing basketball at all standards and all abilities. Sherbrooke offers a representative program for both junior and senior players which for a small association is no easy achievement.
In 2017, Sherbrooke was invited into discussions regarding the proposed four court stadium at Upwey High School. Now Sherbrooke SUNS has a home court to be envied, four courts, room to provide consistent programs without having to split groups across several venues – a first rate facility which provides opportunity to play sport to the local community.
